Gongkwon Yusul is a modern Korean martial art system founded by Kang Jun in 1996. Its main influences include the martial arts of Hapkido(Yoo Sool Kwan and Hwarangdo), [[Hakko-ryu]] jujitsu, Judo and Kyuktooki (Korean style Thai-boxing).

Gongkwon Yusul is... a system which emphasises the application of striking, locking and throwing techniques in practical, free-flowing fighting situations, rather than the static applications, more in common in traditional styles of Hapkido. It also varies from Hapkido in that many of its hand techniques are strongly influenced by Western boxing and that a significant part of Gongkwon Yusul training is in groundwork applying techniques more akin to Judo or Brazilian Jujitsu, than most Hapkido styles. In a sense Gongkwon Yusul combines the practical, free-flowing technique application, often seen in mixed martial arts, whilst still retaining many traditional martial art attributes, such as uniforms, terminology and ranking structure. Since its foundation the art has grown rapidly in its home county of Korea with many gyms around Seoul and also some regional areas of South Korea. The art is also growing outside Korea. The first international dojang was established in Brazil in 2006, the second in Melbourne, Australiain 2007 and the third in Launceston, Australia in 2008.

Now Gongkwon Yusul is in China, Japan, Australia, Germany, Spain, Russia, Sweden, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, and finally USA!!!

What is Gongkwon Yusul?

Mankind has systemized the techniques and skills in the form of martial arts and combative fighting to get the better of the enemy in many major and minor battles since the history began. Weaponry including spears and swords were developed for martial purpose until relatively modern weapons such as guns or artillery were invented. Martial arts that use only fists were developed in its own way in preparation for a situation where no weapon is available.

Martial arts also changed in response to the changing requirement of times as the society started to change gradually over time. Unlike weapons like swords or spears in the past, scientific and modern weapons have become universalized, and the combative fighting among ordinary people became prohibited in peaceful society. As a result, the fatal martial arts that may determine the life and death have become something that is not relevant to ordinary people any more.

Under those circumstances, the trend of martial arts circles were divided into two major directions. One is the direction that pursue the social physical education and sports in which all men and women without regard to age can participate. The other is the direction that keeps the intrinsic strength of martial art intact no matter how classical it may look.

Gongkwon Yusul is the real warfare martial art that accepts the advantages of both directions in order to fit it into the realistic situation of modern people.

Gongkwon Yusul comprehensively allows even the techniques whose use is limited or whose transfer is prohibited for its greatest threat perceived by the existing martial art circles. It is a martial art that enables a person to get the better of the other person with great effectiveness and efficiency in the quickest manner by weaponizing all parts of body and using them without any limit in a situation where no weapon is available. It has been studied very heavily to embrace the dilemmatic advantages of safety and practicality for the training. Also, it has been pursuing the harmony between the striking technique and fighting method which are basically employed by martial arts and combative fighting.

What is the most important in Gongkwonyusool is to use the striking technique and fighting skill in the most reasonable and harmonious way without adhering to forms or fixed concept in order to completely get the better of the other person physically.

The Spirit of Gongkwon Yusul

Gongkwon Yusul takes the consideration of the other person as the top priority in training all the time because its techniques are considerably and really war-oriented and fatal.

Specifically, its various and powerful fighting techniques, like causing the rupture of joints or ligament of the other person or intercepting the supply of oxygen to carotid, cannot be learned properly in true sense without deep consideration of the other person. The spiritual unity between the other person and I is the most important thing because the smallest mistake may lead to a very serious safety accident.

As Gongkwon Yusul put emphasis on the inheritance of true spirit of martial art , the concept of 'full point' is considered important in using the striking or fighting technique. This reflects the recognition of the effectiveness that can be fatal to the other person, but has totally distinctive characteristics from the offensive techniques of other sports to get the score in specially limited situation.

Moreover, getting the better of the other person is not merely about simply using external force through indiscriminate offence, but also accomplishing the real triumph based on the internal power that suits  those who really pursue the spirit of martial arts.
